What Makes a Classic?

For those of you in the constant conversation of “what makes a classic (or a great) piece of literature”, here’s a quote for you from Fiction and the Shape of Belief by Sheldon Sacks (p.253):

[A masterpiece] modifies our very being and makes us feel…that we are not the same men and women we were when we began it.
